CopyCat IKEA Swedish Meatballs

If you have had the meatballs at IKEA, you know they are unique. I love them. The flavor is a tad different than my regular Best Baked Meatballs, and the gravy is amazing. I have a version of Swedish Meatballs that my momma made for us growing up, and this gravy is lighter than that. It is so so good! Serve CopyCat IKEA Swedish Meatballs with cranberry sauce or the unique Lingonberry sauce for the perfectly tart pairing.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Spray a baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl combine ground turkey, ground beef, eggs, oats, onion, salt, nutmeg, allspice, and pepper.  Shape in to 2 inch balls.  Place meatballs in to a greased baking dish and bake for 20 minutes until done in the center.
  3. While meatballs are baking, you can make the sauce.
  4. In a large saucepan or deep skillet, melt the butter over medium heat and stir in the olive oil.  Add in the flour and cook while stiring for about 2 minutes making sure to not burn it.
  5. Slowly add in the water while wisking so as to break up any lumps.  Add in beef base and continue to wisk until sauce comes to a simmer and starts to thicken.
  6. Turn heat to low when sauce has thickened and stir in sour cream.  Keep heat very low.
  7. Add in cooked meatballs and let them soak in the warm sauce for a bit to add the flavor.
  8. Serve over hot rice, potatoes, or egg noodles with a scoop of cranberry or lingonberry sauce for a tart zip.
  9. Enjoy!

Notes

If you do not have beef base, you can use chicken.  If you only have prepared broth, you can use chicken or beef (4 cups instead of water and omit base)
